Alexis Ohanian: How to Make a Splash in Social Media

Updated: October 24, 2010

For today, I’m sharing with you a short video taken from TED India last November 2009 entitled, “How to Make a Splash in Social Media” by Alexis Ohanian.

For those who don’t know, TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading”.

It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design.

Now, the video below tells the story of how the internet, particularly online social media, was able to help the whaling campaign of Greenpeace.

Let’s now watch Alexis Ohanian, one of the founders of Reddit, and the 4-minute story of an adopted whale that made a big splash in social media.

What are the things we learned from this?

First, it shows why it is important to know Social Media Optimization. The internet has really become a great marketing tool for businesses and you should learn how to use it.

Second, it gives us a glimpse of how the internet is a great market in itself. Not only is it a level playing field, but also, a tech-savvy, upper/middle class demographic. Make a product that will capture their attention and interest and you’ll have a global market at the palm of your hands.

And lastly, as Alexis pointed out in the end, it costs nothing to get content online now. Online stores in Multiply and blogging for income are just some of the ways people are earning money online without capital.
