There are many ways to make money online. The most popular perhaps is selling products. And when it comes to selling products, my favorite is selling digital products because there’s no need to manage your virtually infinite inventory.
And among all digital products, I believe that the most accessible and profitable venture is selling ebooks.
Indeed, the internet has paved the way for anyone to become a self-published author. And for many years, it has become a great source of income for many, myself included.
If you’re looking to try this income opportunity, then here are eight quick but useful tips on how to make money from selling ebooks online.
1. Choose a profitable niche.
Ebooks are most often non-fiction. And the most profitable niches are health and fitness, relationships, and business and finance. From experience, these three rake in the most dollars.
Health and fitness can be about losing weight, acne prevention, managing acid reflux, getting rid of beer belly, how to train for a marathon, etc. – you get the idea.
Meanwhile, relationship topics include dating tips, making a marriage work, how to find your soul mate, and everything else you can think of about love.
But this niche can also talk about other types of relationships, particularly about family and friends. There are ebooks about dealing with a loss of a child, how to help a friend suffering from a terminal illness, and even taking care of a pet.
Lastly, the business and finance niche is not just about money and investments. It can also be about career development, productivity, and people management.
2. Define your target market thoroughly.
Your ebook should speak well to your target readers. To do that, you need to have a good understanding of who they are. Specifically, you must know their demographics and psychographics.
It’s not enough to define their gender, age, and financial status. It’s best to also have an idea of their lifestyle, their values, principles, hobbies, and even their fears and aspirations in life.
The better you know your target market, the easier it will be to convince them to buy your ebook.
3. Solve a painful problem of your target market.
The more painful the problem that you’re trying to solve, the more profitable your ebook will be. Because people are more likely to spend on something that will stop them from experiencing pain.
However, understand that pain is subjective. What is painful to one may not be painful to another. So again, it helps to know your target market well.
For example, peer acceptance is a painful problem for young, single people. But this usually becomes a minor bother for married couples who are busy raising a family.
4. Be clear and straightforward.
Ebooks are normally shorter than your usual non-fiction paperback. People who buy them are after the useful information. They are not looking for a literary masterpiece.
Thus, it’s best to present your ideas and solutions, simply and clearly. Use words and grammar that your target market can understand and relate to.
5. Write first. Edit later.
When creating an ebook, it’s best to just go ahead and write everything down. Organize an outline, and then Jot down or type all your ideas first.
Once you finish your first draft, then that’s when you can correct spelling mistakes, improve your grammar, and add more details or expound on what’s already written.
6. Invest on a great book cover design.
Your ebook will always be judged first by how your cover looks like. So make sure that it’s done well, and more importantly, says clearly what to expect inside.
If you’re not a graphic artist, then outsourcing your ebook cover design to one is recommended.
7. Remember that there’s no standard price.
When deciding on the price of your ebook, it’s good to ask yourself how much is it worth from the perspective of your target market. Moreover, you should also consider if they can afford it.
However, from personal observation, I’ve noticed that most people sell their ebooks at $1 for every 10 pages (or 3,000 words). So if the ebook has 80 pages, then it’s usually being sold at around $8.
8. Learn how to write an effective copy.
Regardless if you’re going to sell your ebook in Amazon Kindle, on your own website, or wherever online – it’s important for you to learn how to write an effective copy to convince your target market to buy it.
Focus on creating a message that your ebook offers an effective solution to the problem they have. And be sure to showcase testimonials from customers on your sales page or in the product details section.
Selling ebooks online remains profitable until today, as proven by some friends who have published and sold their work in recent months.
And above all, regardless of how much money you’ll make, once established – it then becomes a great way to earn passive income.
