The Origin of the Franchise Business Model

Updated: June 11, 2013

Many Filipinos, especially OFWs, choose franchising to get an immediate and convenient headstart in business.

Buying a turn-key franchise, rather than building a business from the ground up, is also a great way for individuals to fast-track their learning on how to run and manage a business.

While franchising a business tends to be more expensive than starting your own, the time you save in business planning and development often makes it worth the price.

For many years, a lot of people all of over the world have benefited from this innovative business model – but have you ever wondered who first thought of this business concept?

The 6-minute educational video below from TED Ed, tells us the very interesting origins of the franchise. And I hope you enjoy watching this one as much as I did.

  1. Very interesting history of franchising! I believe that my “timing” for your article couldn’t be better & quite “related” to the “history” of franchising as I am planning to franchise my “Home or Office Slimming, Hair & Skin Care Services”.

I am hoping to know how much is it to advertise on your site to get interested parties? Or, could I offer a percentage commission to anyone personally referred by you or/and have come to know about my franchising thru your website?

I look forward to your kind reply and thank you for featuring the franchising business concept!

    God bless!

  2. Looking back I wish I had built my own business from the ground up. I was impatient and wanted to make money quickly. Buying an expensive franchise didn’t turn out well for me, but, just as Fitz said, fast-tracked my learning in a year’s time as opposed to enrolling for a 4-yr MBA.
