What’s a good business to start in 2015?
Before astrologers start publishing their predictions on good businesses for the Year of the Sheep, let me offer first my practical list of “negosyo ideas” that I think will do well this year.
These business opportunities are based on the 2015 outlook reports that I’ve read from various industry experts and financial analysts, whom I believe are the best people to listen to when it comes to this topic.
The 2016 Elections
The next presidential election is just around the corner, and this year is the best time to lay the foundation for your business ventures, before the campaign period starts.
Start a printing and corporate giveaways business and be a supplier for tarpaulin, posters, streamers, buttons, shirts and other campaign paraphernalia.
There will be a high demand for social media consultants and online reputation managers. Be an Olivia Pope and put up a social media marketing, crisis management or a public relations company.
Be the business behind campaign rallies and press conferences. From events planning to venue rentals, from videography to photography, from lighting supplies to sound engineering – there are a lot of ventures you can do.
Food and Catering
From light snacks to five-course meals, you can provide the sustenance to campaign rallies, political party meetings and of course, election victory celebrations.
No time to start a business? You can still make money as a jingle composer, event emcee, graphic designer, photographer, stylist, or whatever individual services that candidates and political parties would need.
The creation of the Southeast Asian economic community will definitely give birth to new business opportunities for enterprising minds. This list of possible ventures is just the tip of the iceberg.
Travel and Tourism
Get ready to welcome our ASEAN neighbors through affordable accommodations, reasonably-priced dining experiences, quality souvenir products, culture-centric entertainment and eco-adventure packages.
Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam – ten countries, ten food cultures – choose one and specialize or create your own fusion cuisine.
Expect our ASEAN neighbors to look for English-learning schools in the country. But don’t limit yourself to teaching the language, you can also offer translation services and other related businesses.
How do you register a company in Singapore? What are the requirements to hire a remote worker in Malaysia? How much taxes do I pay in Indonesia? If you know the answers to these questions, then you can put up a business services consultancy firm.
Thanks to airline seat sales, group buying sites and online shops – Filipinos are now more savvy and comfortable at buying things online. Thus, eCommerce remains as one of the best business frontiers to explore for everyone.
Give Lazada and Zalora a run for their money and put up your own online fashion store. Gather books from local authors and create an online bookstore. Be the next Amazon or Alibaba and sell everything.
If a 12-year-old kid can become an app developer, then you can too. If a Vietnamese independent game developer can earn $50,000 a day from a simple game as Flappy Bird, then you can too.
Uber disrupted the Metro Manila public transport system last year, and I expect more tech startups to do the same kind of disruption in other industries this year. Will you be one of them?
Internet Vending Machine
If running an online business is not your thing, then putting up an auto-pilot internet business can be your option. One example is to learn how to sell ebooks online, especially for Filipinos who are just starting to get into digital books.
More people online means more people with tablets, laptops and smartphones. Cash-in on this trend by selling gadget protection products, complimentary tech attachments and even fashion accessories.
Online Freelance Jobs
Work from home opportunities will continue to grow. Based on our sales at 199Jobs, the most profitable ventures are writing, graphic design, social media marketing and virtual assistance.
Philippine Demographic Window
The year 2015 is when the Philippines enters the period of time when the population of children under 15 years old is below 30% and the number of people above 65 years old is below 15%. Economists believe that when the working age group is the most prominent, high economic growth happens.
Provide the manpower needs on cleaning, babysitting, laundry, home repairs, and other handyman services, for people who are always busy working. Condominium living will be on the rise, and provides a captured market for these businesses.
Working people love to dine out, travel, and keep-up with the latest fashion, health and beauty trends. Open a restaurant, put up a travel agency, or be a health and nutrition supplement distributor, among others.
The financial industry will continue to grow, which means there are good business opportunities in financial education, wealth management and distribution of financial products and services.
I see good business potential in local crowdfunding. Investments would have to be made in educating Filipinos about it, but I’m sure it won’t take long before we have our own version of Kickstarter or Indiegogo.
The Sweet Spot
Were you able to get a good business idea from the list above? I do hope so. But let me end by telling you that whatever business that you plan to build this 2015, always remember to go for “The Sweet Spot”.
